Slovenia & Croatia with The Adventurous Ewe – October 2025

Nov 13, 2025

We just returned from an incredible women-only tour to Slovenia and Croatia for women 50+ with The Adventurous Ewe. We explored beautiful lakes, castles, and coastlines while sharing laughter, great food, and lasting friendship.

A women-only journey through lakes, mountains, and seaside villages

The first thing that takes your breath away in Slovenia is the scenery — lush green mountains, fairy-tale lakes, and water so turquoise you keep wondering if it’s real. Every view feels like a postcard, and you find yourself constantly reaching for your camera. It’s no exaggeration to say that Slovenia is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve visited so far.

From Zagreb to the magic of Lake Bled

Our Adventurous Ewe women’s tour began in Zagreb, the charming capital of Croatia. We gathered for a welcome dinner in a cosy underground restaurant — our first delicious taste of Croatian cuisine and a chance to connect as a group.

The next morning, we made our way to the storybook town of Bled, famous for its serene lake and the little island with its church in the centre. On the way, we stopped to walk through Vintgar Gorge, following wooden paths alongside thundering blue-green water. It was the perfect introduction to Slovenia’s wild natural beauty.

In Bled, we took a traditional wooden pletna boat across the lake to the island, where some of the ladies climbed the bell tower to ring the famous wishing bell — legend says that means they’ll return one day! Afterwards, we sat outdoors with steaming cups of thick, rich hot chocolate (more like dessert in a cup), taking in the scenery. Some of the group cycled around the lake while others strolled, shopped, and sipped Aperol Spritz — which quickly became our signature drink on tour.

Triglav National Park & the joy of local flavours

A highlight was our visit to Triglav National Park and Lake Bohinj, a tranquil alpine gem surrounded by peaks. On the way back, we stopped at a quaint countryside restaurant to enjoy homemade sausages and local wine — the kind of authentic meal that makes travel so special.

Laughter in Ljubljana

Next, we journeyed to Ljubljana, Slovenia’s charming capital. En route, we stopped in Radovljica, hoping to explore the Farmers’ Market. Though the market was small, the homemade treats made up for it!

A forest walk before lunch ended with a burst of laughter when our guide ran ahead to say our booking had been moved earlier — some ladies sprinted back while others jumped into the van, cheering on our driver to “drive like Michael Schumacher!” The walkers won, slightly breathless but triumphant.

The following day, we celebrated a special 70th birthday in grand style — lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant perched on a cliff inside a castle. Four courses, champagne, laughter, and a few Aperol Spritz later, we all agreed it was a day to remember.

Underground wonders & seaside magic

The Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle were another unforgettable experience. Riding the little train through the vast underground caverns felt like stepping into another world. The castle itself, built dramatically into a cliffside, was eerie and fascinating — complete with a medieval “long drop” for prisoners!

We were happy to emerge into the sunshine and, naturally, stop for a light lunch (and yes, another Aperol Spritz). From there, we travelled to the Slovenian coast, stopping first in Koper, the country’s oldest port town, where we discovered a beautiful little shop selling locally made spirits and biscuits.

Then on to Izola, a peaceful seaside village, for a marina-side lunch of octopus and pasta followed by creamy gelato.

Our overnight stay was in Piran, a coastal jewel where our hotel sat right on the promenade overlooking the Adriatic. We ended the day with rooftop cocktails and a golden sunset — pure magic.

Crossing into Croatia

The next morning, we crossed back into Croatia, stopping in the medieval hilltop village of Motovun and the colourful fishing port of Rovinj, straight out of a storybook. Sitting by the water, sipping wine, and watching boats drift across the bay was one of those “pause and breathe” moments that remind us why we travel.

Before returning to Zagreb, we explored the grand Roman amphitheatre in Pula, built between 27 BC and AD 68 — still used today for concerts by artists like Pavarotti and Elton John.

Our final evening in Zagreb was filled with laughter, stories, and a bottle of Prosecco to toast new friendships and unforgettable memories.
