DAY 1

Welcome to Tokyo

Welcome to Japan! On arrival at either Haneda or Narita Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted before transferring to our boutique hotel in one of Tokyo’s charming, quieter neighbourhoods.

This evening, we’ll gather for a traditional welcome dinner at a local izakaya, where we’ll get to know one another over delicious Japanese dishes. We’ll also enjoy an orientation to the journey ahead, ending the evening with a celebratory sake toast as we begin our unforgettable autumn adventure together.

DAY 2

Old Tokyo & Local Life

Today we’ll discover a different side of Tokyo, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with everyday life. Wander through the historic temple district of Asakusa or the tranquil Nezu Temple before enjoying a leisurely stroll along the Sumida River, framed by magnificent golden ginkgo trees.

This afternoon, we’ll explore the charming Yanaka district, one of Tokyo’s best-kept secrets, where artisan workshops, traditional crafts and quiet laneways offer a glimpse into old Japan. This evening, we’ll savour one of Japan’s favourite comfort foods during a guided ramen tasting.

DAY 3

Mount Takao: A Nature Escape

Escape the city for the day as we journey by scenic train to Mount Takao, a favourite retreat for locals seeking fresh mountain air and spectacular autumn colours. Visit the beautiful Yakuo-in Temple, perched on the mountainside, and, weather permitting, enjoy views of the iconic Mount Fuji.

After a traditional lunch at the historic Takahashiya restaurant, we’ll return to Tokyo, having experienced a peaceful side of Japan that many visitors never discover.

DAY 4

Tokyo at Your Leisure

Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Browse Tokyo’s renowned department stores and boutique shops, discover hidden cafés, visit museums or simply soak up the atmosphere of this fascinating city. Whether you’re searching for unique souvenirs, Japanese ceramics or the latest fashion, this free day allows you to explore according to your own interests.

DAY 5

Into the Japanese Alps

This morning we’ll board the Limited Express train bound for the picturesque mountain town of Matsumoto. Surrounded by the Japanese Alps, we’ll visit the magnificent Matsumoto Castle, its striking black exterior reflected in moats lined with brilliant autumn maples.

Later, we’ll venture into the peaceful Hotaka countryside, famous for its crystal-clear spring water, wasabi farms and scenic cycling paths. Don’t miss the surprisingly delicious wasabi ice cream!

Tonight’s highlight is an authentic stay in a traditional ryokan, where you can relax in a soothing onsen before enjoying an elegant multi-course kaiseki dinner.

DAY 6

Kanazawa: Samurai & Geisha Traditions

Travelling by Japan’s famous Shinkansen, we’ll arrive in Kanazawa, a city renowned for its beautifully preserved history and artistic heritage. Wander through the exquisite Kenroku-en Garden, considered one of Japan’s three finest landscape gardens, before exploring the atmospheric samurai district and historic geisha quarter.

A special tea experience with a geisha (subject to availability) offers a rare insight into one of Japan’s most enduring cultural traditions.

DAY 7

The Flavours of Kanazawa

Today we immerse ourselves in Kanazawa’s rich artistic and culinary traditions. Discover why the city produces almost all of Japan’s gold leaf during a hands-on craft experience before exploring the bustling Omicho Market with a local food expert.

This evening promises one of the tour’s most memorable experiences as we’re welcomed into a private Japanese home to share a delicious home-cooked dinner and genuine local hospitality.

DAY 8
Shirakawa-go & Takayama

Our journey continues to the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go, where the iconic thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses create one of Japan’s most picturesque landscapes. Surrounded by brilliant autumn foliage, it’s easy to feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.

Later we continue to the beautifully preserved town of Takayama, where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the region’s famous Hida beef, regarded as some of the finest wagyu in Japan (your own account).

DAY 9

Takayama's Timeless Traditions

This morning we’ll browse Takayama’s charming riverside morning market, where local farmers and artisans sell seasonal produce and handmade crafts. We’ll then explore the beautifully preserved Old Town and visit the historic Takayama Jinya, once the administrative centre of the region.

The afternoon is free to wander the narrow streets, sample local sake from centuries-old breweries or browse the many craft and artisan shops.

DAY 10

Kyoto: Japan's Cultural Heart

Today we travel to Kyoto by train, Japan’s ancient capital and home to some of the country’s most treasured traditions. After settling into our accommodation, we’ll visit the peaceful Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple and its enchanting bamboo grove.

As evening falls, we’ll wander through Kyoto’s lantern-lit streets near Pontocho, where, with a little luck, we may glimpse elegantly dressed geiko and maiko on their way to evening appointments before enjoying dinner featuring Kyoto’s famous street food.

DAY 11

Ohara: Hidden Kyoto

Leaving the city behind, we’ll visit the peaceful mountain village of Ohara, one of Kyoto’s hidden treasures. Surrounded by forests ablaze with autumn colours, we’ll explore the beautiful Sanzen-in Temple and its tranquil gardens before enjoying a warming lunch featuring the local speciality, miso nabe, a comforting hot pot perfect for the season.

Explore Your Way

Free day to explore Kyoto at your own pace.

Or optional tours: 

  1. You may wish to visit the ancient city of Nara, home to over a thousand friendly bowing deer and the magnificent Todai-ji Temple with its enormous bronze Buddha. Cost TBA
  2.  Alternatively, join an optional excursion to Hiroshima and the sacred island of Miyajima, famous for its iconic floating torii gate. Cost TBA

DAY 13

Farewell in Osaka

Our final day takes us to the vibrant city of Osaka. We’ll visit Osaka Castle Park, where brilliant autumn maples frame one of Japan’s most famous castles, before exploring the lively Dotonbori district as its famous neon lights begin to glow.

We’ll wander through the atmospheric lantern-lit lanes of Hōzen-ji Yokochō before gathering for a memorable farewell dinner, celebrating new friendships, unforgettable experiences and the incredible journey we’ve shared through Japan’s spectacular autumn landscapes.

Sayonara, Japan

After breakfast, it’s time to say farewell to Japan. Filled with wonderful memories, new friendships and a deeper appreciation of this remarkable country, you’ll be transferred later in the day to the airport for your onward journey, taking home experiences that will stay with you long after the autumn leaves have fallen.
