Join our lovely group of ladies on The Adventurous Ewe tour of Croatia, with an exciting dash into Slovenia, to the fairy-tale city of Ljubljana and Lake Bled. We travel through Croatia’s inspiring landscapes, taking in lush countryside, like Plitvice Lakes National Park, with magical cascading waters and verdant forests. The crystal-clear waters of the Dalmatian coast are calling us and we heed that with visits to the medieval cities of Dubrovnik and Split, and the picturesque island of Hvar.

Our travels are infused with a history of Greek, Roman and Byzantine architecture and influences, and we blend the ancient with the modern on walking tours, with special culinary moments to savour traditional fare. Friendly people complete this unforgettable adventure with a small group of like-minded travellers.

ITINERARY

DAY 1

Exploring the city of Zagreb, Croatia

Welcome to Zagreb. The capital of Croatia is a vibrant city that seamlessly blends historic charm with modern flair. We explore the cobbled streets and medieval buildings of the Upper Town (Gornji Grad), and landmarks like the colourful tiled roof of St. Mark’s Church and typically Gothic style of Zagreb Cathedral, whose 108.4 meter spire makes it one of the tallest churches in the world.

The Lower Town (Donji Grad) features wide boulevards, green parks, and bustling squares such as Ban Jelačić Square. Zagreb is also a cultural hub, home to numerous museums, galleries, and theatres, as well as lively markets and an eclectic café scene. With its friendly atmosphere and rich cultural heritage, beginning our tour at Zagreb sets us up for adventures into Croatia and Slovenia.

DAY 2

Gastronmic discovery of Zagreb

We embark on a 6-hour gastronomic discovery through the streets of Zagreb, guided by a food expert.  The sight of fresh produce and aroma of coffee beckons us towards Dolac, Zagreb’s oldest marketplace.  We’ll sample coffee like a true Croat and taste some of the world’s best cheeses, and other edible treats.  We finish the tour with a traditional Zagrebian festive lunch, and find out more about the local traditions, culture and lifestyle.

DAY 3

The city of dragons in Slovenia

It’s only a 2-hour drive between Zagreb in Croatia and Ljubljana in the very heart of Slovenia, so we head for this City of Dragons! The dragon is the symbol of Ljubljana, embodying power, courage and wisdom and a symbolic protector of the city. Ljubljana’s history traces 3,000 years of Roman, Medieval and Hapsburg influences and to help put this into perspective, we enjoy a walk to Preseren Square and the ancient buildings of the Old Quarter.  Climbing to the top of the viewing tower, we get a view of the surrounding marshes, hills and distant peaks of snow-covered Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

DAY 4

To Split via mysterious forest

Crossing the border back into Croatia, we make our way south to Split. En-route we stop at The Plitvice Lakes National Park UNESCO World Heritage site, with its mysterious ancient forest known as “Devil’s Garden”.  This lush valley of terraced lakes is connected by multi-cascade waterfalls and clear blue-green waters.  Our destination is Split, the largest city on the Dalmatian coast on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea.

DAY 5

Split - History & Cuisine

Split is a beautiful coastal city whose port was a Greek trading post, taken over by the Romans, who built the Diocletian’s Palace at the end of the 3rd century. It’s noteworthy as the largest and best-preserved example of Roman palatial architecture, in a transitional style half Greek and half Byzantine. We head out of Split to visit the small village of Klis, speckled with vineyards and olive groves. 

As with much of our travels, our thoughts turn to sampling the best food of the region, so we stop at Stella Croatica for lunch. This was started by the youngest daughter of the Dabelić family to preserve the gastronomic heritage of her family. Be sure to save room for one of their traditional desserts.

DAY 6

Boat trip to Hvar island

Step aboard the catamaran ferry to Hvar Island where we will spend the day exploring.  This island is in the Adriatic Sea is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and historic charm. The town of Hvar is a picturesque gem, with 13th century walls, hilltop fortress and Gothic palaces that hold the secrets of its ancient past. Today, the lively harbour is lined with yachts, making the most of a coastline with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming, sailing, and water sports.

DAY 7

Spectacular coastal drive to Dubrovnik

Today, we take a 3-hour drive south along one of the best coastal drives in the world to Dubrovnik.  We stop en route at Ston, a salt-producing town that has world-famous defensive walls dating from 1334, encircling the settlement for three miles. We’ll find a mesmerizing scenic spot on the Peljesac peninsula for lunch, and soak up this rugged coastline, towering cliffs, and crystal waters. Our hotel in Dubrovnik is just 15-minutes’ walk from the UNESCO-protected Old City and 5-minutes’ to the famous pebble Miramare Beach.

DAY 8

Exploring Dubrovnik on foot

Walking is the best way to explore Dubrovnik, and we’ll find out from our guide why it’s called the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’. This stunning city on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast is renowned for well-preserved medieval architecture and riveting coastal views. Enclosed by massive stone walls, the Old Town is another UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring narrow cobblestone streets, historic churches, and impressive monuments, such as the Rector’s Palace and Sponza Palace. The Stradun, the city’s main street, bustles with life, lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. 

During this day, we take a drive along the coast to a family household in the charming village of Lovorno, where we learn to cook various grandmothers’ recipes, using fresh and organic local products.

DAY 9

Dubrovnik

The Konavle Valley, located just south of Dubrovnik, is a region known for its lush landscapes, vineyards, and rural charm. We’ll escape into the nature of this fertile valley, dotted with quaint villages, olive groves, and ancient stone houses. The town of Cavtat, the heart of Konavle, is a coastal gem with a rich history of Roman occupation. Its old town features narrow streets, centuries-old buildings, and cultural landmarks, like the Racic Mausoleum and the Vlaho Bukovac House. We’ll stroll along Cavtat’s charming waterfront, lined with cafes, restaurants, and palm trees.

Dubrovnik is the final destination on our Croatia-Slovenia tour, so this evening we have our farewell dinner and raise a glass to the new friendships made by fellow Adventurous Ewes.

DAY 10

Farewell

The time has come to say goodbye. An airport transfer takes us to Dubrovnik airport for our flights home.
